(AP Photo\/David Zalubowski)<br \/>TikTok restored service to users in the United States on Sunday just hours after the <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tiktok-ban-trump-supreme-court-36c3c3b42f743a35c69e1c74341f1f30\">popular video-sharing platform<\/a><\/span> went dark in response to <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-tiktok-china-security-speech-166f7c794ee587d3385190f893e52777\">a federal ban<\/a><\/span>, which President-elect Donald Trump said he would try to pause by executive order on his first day in office. <br \/>Trump said he planned to issue the order to give TikTok\u2019s China-based parent company <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tiktok-us-ban-trump-extension-a3936a93f174d176d3633a67554d771b\">more time<\/a><\/span> to find an <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tiktok-buyers-divestment-ban-8429dfb422c4cefb6b0807aeb2c5cd56\">approved buyer<\/a><\/span> before the ban takes full effect. He announced the move on his Truth Social account as millions of U.S. TikTok users awoke to discover they could <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-tiktok-china-security-speech-166f7c794ee587d3385190f893e52777\">no longer access<\/a><\/span> the TikTok app or platform. <br \/>But by Sunday afternoon, a message greeted those who signed on thanking them \u2014 and the president-elect \u2014 for their support. <br \/>\u201cAs a result of President Trump\u2019s efforts, TikTok is back in the U.S.!\u201d the message read. <br \/>AP correspondent Julie Walker reports TikTok says it\u2019s in the process of restoring service to US users.<br \/>TikTok said it shut down the platform late Saturday because of a federal law that required parent company ByteDance to sell its U.S. operation by Sunday. <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tiktok-ban-app-stores-apple-google-a905693c43984e9b80d432a3a933a73f\">Google and Apple<\/a><\/span> also removed TikTok from their digital stores. The law, which passed with <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-tiktok-campaign-account-young-voters-ban-d351ccb17c59890473af1685a0a756f3\">wide bipartisan support<\/a><\/span> in April, allows for steep fines. <br \/>While the company that runs TikTok in the U.S. said on X that the steps Trump outlined Sunday provided \u201cthe necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties,\u201d the TikTok app remained remained unavailable for download in <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/apple-inc-trials-lifestyle-technology-business-ab4cdc38a09734e3632c25228636bdd0\">Apple<\/a><\/span> and Google\u2019s app stores. <br \/>\u201cIt was a brilliant marketing stunt for both TikTok and incoming president Donald Trump,\u201d Jasmine Enberg, an analyst with market research firm Emarketer, said. \u201cBy abruptly shutting off service, TikTok proved how unpopular the ban was among its users.\u201d<br \/>After her 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 comeback victory over Belinda Bencic in the fourth round, Coco Gauff drew a broken heart on the lens of a courtside TV camera with the message, \u201c RIP TikTok USA,\u201d a reference to the ban of the popular app back home.<br \/>The law that took effect Sunday required ByteDance to cut ties with the platform\u2019s U.S. operations due to national security concerns. However, the statute authorized the sitting president to grant a 90-day extension if a viable sale was underway. <br \/>Although investors made some offers, ByteDance has said it would not sell. Trump said his order would \u201cextend the period of time before the law\u2019s prohibitions take effect\u201d and \u201cconfirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped keep TikTok from going dark before my order.\u201d<br \/>It wasn\u2019t immediately clear how Trump\u2019s promised action would fare from a legal standpoint since the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously upheld the ban on Friday and the statute came into force the day before Trump\u2019s return to the White House. <br \/>\u201cI think Trump can at least make an argument that the language is meant to cover any president,\u201d University of Richmond law professor Carl Tobias said. <br \/>Some lawmakers who voted for the sale-or-ban law, including some of Trump\u2019s <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-tiktok-ban-biden-facebook-cnbc-tik-tok-72768a92439de45b38e88cc255504ab5\">fellow Republicans<\/a><\/span>, remain in favor of it. Sen. (AP Photo\/Stephanie Mullen)<br \/>\u201cIn the next week or two, before the courts have the chance to do anything, this is certainly going to be a political fight, not a legal one,\u201d McGill said.<br \/>The on-and-off availability of TikTok came after the Supreme Court ruled that the risk to national security posed by TikTok\u2019s ties to China outweighed concerns about limiting speech by the app or its millions of U.S. users.<br \/>When TikTok users in the U.S. tried to watch or post videos on <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tiktok-timeline-ban-biden-india-d3219a32de913f8083612e71ecf1f428\">the platform<\/a><\/span> as of Saturday night, they saw a pop-up message under the headline, \u201cSorry, TikTok isn\u2019t available right now.\u201d<br \/>\u201cA law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S.,\u201d the message said. \u201cUnfortunately that means you can\u2019t use TikTok for now.\u201d<br \/>The app was removed late Saturday from prominent app stores and remained so as of Sunday afternoon. Apple told customers it also took down other apps developed by ByteDance. They included Lemon8, which some influencers had promoted <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/lemon8-tiktok-ban-alternative-creators-4d9328b4312681cc4f6dcb5d81a5e464\">as a TikTok alternative<\/a><\/span>, the popular video editing app CapCut and photo editor Hypic. <br \/>\u201cApple is obligated to follow the laws in the jurisdictions where it operates,\u201d the company said. <br \/>Google declined to comment. Apple did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on the day\u2019s developments. <br \/>Experts had said the law as written did not require TikTok to take down its platform, only for <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tiktok-alternative-social-media-platforms-ban-49af1bfd2a1543a09b327544c380f217\">app stores<\/a><\/span> to remove it. Current users expected to continue to have access to videos until a lack of updates caused the app to stop working. <br \/>After TikTok was back online Sunday, content creator Tiffany Watson, 20, said she was \u201cpretty hopeful\u201d it would stay up.
