We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<br \/><a href=\"\/topic\/vladimir-putin\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> has hailed <a href=\"\/topic\/russia\">Russia<\/a>\u2019s \u201cunstoppable\u201d <a href=\"\/news\/world\/europe\/russia-putin-hypersonic-ballistic-missile-b2652458.html\">hypersonic missiles<\/a> as he threatened to strike the West in a coded message.<br \/>The Russian leader claimed there was no way of stopping the intermediate-range \u201cOreshnik\u201d ballistic missile <a href=\"\/news\/world\/europe\/russia-ukraine-war-putin-missile-hypersonic-b2651372.html\">used to strike Ukraine on Thursday.<\/a><br \/>He said last week\u2019s attack on Dnipro was a direct response to Ukrainian forces striking Russia with\u00a0<a href=\"\/news\/uk\/home-news\/storm-shadow-missiles-cost-russia-ukraine-b2652457.html\">US\u00a0and British\u00a0long-range missiles<\/a>.<br \/>\u201cThere is no countermeasure to such a missile, no means of intercepting it, in the world today. And I will emphasise once again that we will continue testing this newest system,\u201d Putin warned.<br \/>He also said: \u201cWe consider ourselves entitled to use our weapons against the military facilities of those countries that allow their weapons to be used against our facilities.\u201d<br \/>He claimed the new missile could be fitted with several conventional warheads and could be as devastating as strategic nuclear weapons.<br \/>Ukrainian air defence forces said the missile \u2013 which has a range of more than 3,400 miles and can be used to carry nuclear warheads \u2013 was fired from\u00a0Russia\u2019s Astrakhan region, on the Caspian Sea.<br \/>Despite the Kremlin\u2019s rhetoric, Russian officials notified the United States about Thursday\u2019s attack 30 minutes before launching the missile.<br \/>Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky suspects his Russian counterpart\u2019s main objectives are to occupy the entire Donbas region and oust Ukraine\u2019s troops from Kursk.<br \/>Currently, the majority of the Donbas is occupied by Russia.<br \/>\u201cFor Putin, the most important thing is to push us out of the Kursk region,\u201d the Ukrainian president said.<br \/>\u201cI am sure that he wants to push us out by January 20,\u201d Mr Zelensky said, referring to the date US president-elect Donald Trump would be sworn in.<br \/>\u201cIt is very important for him [Putin] to demonstrate that he is in control of the situation,\u201d he said.<br \/>Russian deputy foreign minister Andrei Rudenko said the US was using Taiwan to provoke a crisis in Asia.<br \/>China regards the island as a part of its territory.<br \/>Mr Rudenko said Washington was strengthening military and political contacts with Taipei \u201cunder the slogan\u201d of maintaining the status quo, adding that this was in violation of the \u201cone China\u201d principle.<br \/>\u201cThe goal of such obvious US interference in the region\u2019s affairs is to provoke the People\u2019s Republic of China and generate a crisis in Asia to suit its own selfish interests,\u201d he told Russia\u2019s TASS news agency.<br \/>The risk of the Ukraine conflict spilling into other parts of the world, including Africa, \u201cis real\u201d, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky warned in a post on X.<br \/>He claimed that Russian forces, like Wagner mercenaries, are already destabilising parts of Africa and \u201cexploiting resources and fueling tensions\u201d.<br \/>During my conversation with journalists from African and Latin American countries, I emphasized that Ukraine is committed to strengthening its presence in Africa.
