We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<br \/>Ukraine has launched its first <a href=\"\/news\/world\/europe\/atacms-ukraine-long-range-missiles-putin-biden-b2649495.html\">American-supplied long-range missile strike <\/a>against <a href=\"\/tv\/news\/boris-johnson-french-trump-putin-ukraine-b2649007.html\">Vladimir Putin\u2019s<\/a> forces.<br \/>US and Ukrainian officials said the strikes struck an ammunition depot Russia\u2019s Bryansk region. Ukraine\u2019s army has acknowledged a strike in the area, but has not said what weapons were used. <br \/><a href=\"\/news\/uk\/vladimir-putin-john-healey-ukraine-russia-keir-starmer-b2649147.html\">Russia\u2019s Defense Ministry<\/a> said that that <a href=\"\/news\/world\/europe\/biden-missiles-ukraine-long-range-trump-b2648654.html\">Ukraine fired six U.S.-made ATACMs missiles<\/a>. In a statement reported by Russian news agencies, the ministry said it shot down five of them and damaged one more.<br \/>The announcement comes after <a href=\"\/topic\/joe-biden\">U.S. president Joe Biden<\/a> authorised Ukraine\u2019s use of long-range missiles to strike hundreds of miles inside Russia for the first time.<br \/>It comes as Putin has signed a <a href=\"\/news\/world\/europe\/russia-thermobaric-warhead-drones-ukraine-war-b2649520.html\">revised nuclear doctrine<\/a> to lower the bar for future <a href=\"\/news\/uk\/home-news\/atomic-nuclear-bomb-veterans-post-office-scandal-b2648908.html\">nuclear weapon use<\/a>. <br \/>The updated doctrine, first announced in September but signed by Putin this week, declares that an attack using conventional weapons by any nation that is supported by a nuclear power will now be considered a joint attack on <a href=\"\/topic\/russia\">Russia<\/a>. It does not specify whether a joint attack will trigger a nuclear response.<br \/>But the doctrine does declare that a massive aerial attack against Russia could trigger a nuclear response.<br \/>Volodymyr Zelensky visited the embattled towns of Pokrovsk and Kupiansk on Monday, as their Ukrainian defenders attempt to hold back the Russian onslaught.<br \/>In Pokrovsk, Mr Zelensky visited the 25th Separate Airborne Brigade and awarded medals to soldiers. He then oversaw the construction of trenches and \u201cdefensive structures\u201d at an unspecified location in Donetsk.<br \/>My Zelensky then headed to the city of Kupiansk, which last week repelled a major Russian attack when two tank convoys attempted to gain a foothold in the city.<br \/>Filming himself outside a large Kupiansk sign, Mr Zelensky paid tribute to Ukrainian soldiers, saying \u201cthe strength of our entire Ukrainian army is the people who serve\u201d.<br \/>Chinese and Russian foreign ministers discussed bilateral ties, the conflict in Ukraine, and the situation on the Korean peninsula on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Brazil, they said.<br \/>\u201cWe are truly at an unprecedented stage in the development of our strategic relations of a comprehensive partnership,\u201d Russia\u2019s Sergei Lavrov told China\u2019s Wang Yi, according to a post on the Russian foreign ministry\u2019s Telegram channel.<br \/>Mr Wang said Beijing is willing to work with Russia to further strengthen bilateral \u201ccomprehensive strategic coordination\u201d, the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement.<br \/>The \u201ctwo sides also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis and the situation on the Korean Peninsula\u201d, it added without providing further details.<br \/>China and Russia have held a series of bilateral meetings since Moscow\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine 1,000 days ago.
