(AP) \u2014 California\u2019s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump, on Thursday called for lawmakers to convene a special session ahead of another Trump presidency to safeguard the state\u2019s progressive policies. Meanwhile, attorneys general in blue states across the country announced they were also gearing up for a legal fight.<br \/>The move \u2014 a day after the former president <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/trump-harris-election-updates-11-5-2024\">resoundingly defeated<\/a><\/span> Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race \u2014 effectively reignited California\u2019s resistance campaign against conservative policies that state Democratic leaders started during the first Trump administration.<br \/>\u201cThe freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack \u2014 and we won\u2019t sit idle,\u201d Newsom, who reportedly has <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gavin-newsom-biden-president-democrat-new-hampshire-09d4b827dd4be869245fa790907c81be\">ambitions on the national stage<\/a><\/span>, said in a statement.<br \/>Newsom\u2019s office told The Associated Press that the governor and lawmakers are ready to \u201cTrump-proof\u201d California\u2019s state laws. He called on the Legislature to meet in December and give the attorney general\u2019s office more funding to fight federal challenges but did not give specifics. <br \/>State Attorney General Rob Bonta said his office spent the past year reviewing <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2a41bfdffd344b3a954a98bd44bd9ac9\">more than 120 lawsuits<\/a><\/span> the state filed during Trump\u2019s first term in preparation for new federal actions. <br \/>Bonta said to look at the votes in California: \u201cWe rejected him. We rejected his values. We rejected his agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said his office has been working with Democratic attorneys general across the nation in anticipation of Trump winning to prepare game plans. The states could face a more robust battle this time around with a Republican-dominated Senate and possibly House.<br \/>In New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul said she, Attorney General Letitia James and their senior staffers plan to meet regularly to discuss legal strategies to protect \u201ckey areas that are most likely to face threats from the Trump administration\u201d such as \u201creproductive rights, civil rights, immigration, gun safety, labor rights, LGBTQ rights and our environmental justice.\u201d<br \/>Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, who as state attorney general filed dozens of lawsuits against Trump during his first term, said they will \u201chave to see if he makes good on what he promised and ran on in terms of <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/project-2025-trump-harris-election-heritage-foundation-9183cf4c36c293e11b59847189d26a87\">Project 2025<\/a><\/span> or other things.\u201d<br \/>Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson, a Democrat who has just been elected governor, said he was especially worried about Trump\u2019s recent comments suggesting the military should be used domestically against \u201cthe enemy from within.\u201d<br \/>\u201cIt\u2019s deeply un-American,\u201d he said.<br \/>In some states, including Connecticut, officials are hoping to codify progressive policies into law, \u201cbut there are limits to what our ability is to do that,\u201d Connecticut Comptroller Sean Scanlon said.<br \/>Even in losing California, Trump appeared on track to surpass his 2020 record of more than 6 million votes in the state, at the time more than any GOP candidate before him. Democrats, which hold every statewide office in California and have commanding margins in the Legislature and congressional delegation, outnumber registered Republicans by nearly 2-to-1 statewide and Harris easily carried the state in her losing presidential bid.<br \/>Trump called the Democratic governor \u201cNew-scum\u201d during a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\"         data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-california-coachella-nevada-arizona-newsom-4557c2f98ffc179178fe5b6ec5bcf8aa\">campaign stop in Southern California<\/a><\/span> last month and has relentlessly lambasted the Democratic stronghold and nation\u2019s most populous state over its large number of immigrants in the U.S. illegally, its homeless population and its thicket of regulations. <br \/>Trump also waded into a water rights battle over the endangered delta smelt that has pitted environmentalists against farmers and threatened to withhold federal aid to a state increasingly under threat from wildfires. <br \/>In a speech Wednesday morning, Trump vowed to follow through with his campaign promise of carrying out the mass deportation of immigrants without legal status and prosecuting his political enemies.<br \/>Speaking Thursday, California\u2019s attorney general vowed to protect them.<br \/>\u201cI can promise to the undocumented immigrant community in California that I and my team have been thinking about you for months, and the harm that might come from the Trump administration 2.0. We\u2019ll do everything in our power and use the full authority of our office to defend you,\u201d Bonta said.<br \/>Over the last two decades, state attorneys general have increasingly embraced the role of challenging federal executive policy \u2014 most often when it originates with a president of the opposite party.<br \/>During Trump\u2019s first presidency, Democratic attorneys general banned together to file suits over immigration, Trump\u2019s travel ban for residents of Muslim countries, the environment, internet regulation and other topics.<br \/>The challenges typically have mixed records. But Trump has one possible advantage this time around.
