Mexico became the first team to qualify for the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup after defeating South Korea 1-0 in Guadalajara.
Luis Romo scored the only goal in the 50th minute after goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu failed to collect Raúl Jiménez’s header. Romo reacted quickly and volleyed into the empty net.
South Korea pushed for an equalizer during the closing stages, but Mexico goalkeeper Raúl Rangel made two important saves in the 87th minute before Lee Han-beom directed a stoppage-time opportunity wide.
Mexico have won both of their Group A matches without conceding after opening the tournament with a 2-0 victory over South Africa.

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha reached 13.8 million Instagram followers after making seven saves in a historic World Cup draw with Spain (Photo by Buda Mendes/Getty Images)
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has become one of the breakout figures of the World Cup after his performance against Spain triggered a huge rise in his social media following.
The 40-year-old had approximately 56,000 Instagram followers before Cape Verde’s tournament opener. After making seven saves in a 0-0 draw, his total reportedly climbed to around 13.8 million.
Vozinha was named player of the match after stopping all seven of Spain’s attempts on target and helping Cape Verde earn a point in the country’s first World Cup appearance.
The surge was accelerated by Brazilian broadcaster CazéTV, which encouraged viewers to follow the goalkeeper during and after the match.
His reported follower total now places him ahead of major North American sports figures including Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes, Victor Wembanyama and Jalen Brunson.
“I have worked my whole life for this moment,” Vozinha said after the game. “I’m 40 years old. I thought about leaving, but I continued because of this dream.”

Canada recorded the first men’s World Cup victory in program history with a 6-0 win over nine-man Qatar at BC Place.
Jonathan David scored a hat trick, while Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also found the net. Canada’s other goal came through Mohammed Al-Mannai’s own goal.
Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute before David struck twice to give the co-hosts a 3-0 halftime lead. David completed the first World Cup hat trick by a Canadian player in second-half stoppage time.
Qatar finished with nine players after Homam El Amin and Assim Madibo were sent off. Madibo’s dismissal followed a dangerous challenge on Ismaël Koné, who received lengthy treatment before being taken to hospital with his leg stabilized.
Saliba replaced Koné and scored directly from a free kick before holding up his teammate’s jersey during the celebration.
The victory moves Canada to four points from two Group B matches. Jesse Marsch’s team will face Switzerland in Vancouver on June 24 with first place still available.

Canada are 45 minutes away from their first men’s World Cup victory after taking a commanding 3-0 lead over 10-man Qatar in Vancouver.
Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute after Mahmoud Abunada spilled Jonathan David’s powerful effort, allowing the striker to finish from close range.
David doubled the advantage 13 minutes later, meeting a deflected ball with an excellent right-footed volley into the bottom corner.
Qatar’s task became even more difficult in the 33rd minute when Homam El Amin was sent off for bringing down Tajon Buchanan just outside the penalty area. The incident was initially given as a penalty before a VAR review moved the foul outside the box and upgraded the defender’s yellow card to red.
David added his second goal in first-half stoppage time, tapping into an empty net after Abunada produced an excellent save to deny Larin.
Canada created 14 shots, including eight on target, and recorded 2.42 expected goals during a dominant opening half. Qatar managed only two attempts and did not test Maxime Crépeau.

Lionel Messi’s family has confirmed that his father, Jorge Messi, is receiving medical care for an unspecified health issue.
“He is currently under medical supervision, recovering, and progressing favorably within his current condition,” the family said in a statement provided to ESPN.
No further details were given about the nature of the issue. The family asked the public to disregard reports that do not come from relatives or official channels and requested responsibility and respect around the private matter.
Questions emerged after Messi became emotional while celebrating the opening goal of his hat trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria.
Messi later said his reaction was unrelated to football and followed several difficult days, thanking his teammates and Argentina’s delegation for their support.
Jorge Messi remains under medical supervision while Lionel continues Argentina’s World Cup campaign.

Teboho Mokoena scored a late penalty as South Africa earned a 1-1 draw against Czechia in Atlanta.
Michal Sadilek gave Czechia the lead after only six minutes, finishing a move involving Adam Hlozek and Alexandr Sojka. It was the fastest goal of the 2026 World Cup so far.
Czechia had opportunities to extend their advantage, but Patrik Schick missed two headed chances and Ronwen Williams kept South Africa within reach.
The equalizer arrived in the 83rd minute after Thapelo Maseko’s shot struck Pavel Sulc’s arm inside the penalty area. Mokoena sent Matej Kovar the wrong way from the spot.
South Africa pushed for a winner during the closing stages, but Kovar denied Relebohile Mofokeng before comfortably saving Evidence Makgopa’s late effort.

Ivory Coast striker Elye Wahi will miss the Germany match in Toronto (Photo by Darrian Traynor/Getty Images)
Ivory Coast striker Elye Wahi will not travel to Toronto for Saturday’s World Cup match against Germany after the required authorization for him to enter Canada was not obtained.
The Ivory Coast Football Federation said Wahi would remain in the United States until the squad returns from its second Group E game.
The 23-year-old started Ivory Coast’s opening 1-0 victory over Ecuador, leaving the team without its first-choice centre-forward for a match between two sides that won their opening fixtures.
Wahi is under investigation in France over suspected spot-fixing linked to a Ligue 1 match between Nice and Metz on May 17. French football authorities reported unusual international betting activity on the striker receiving a yellow card, which he was shown during the 0-0 draw.
The Marseille prosecutor’s office confirmed that a 23-year-old Ligue 1 player was arrested on May 29 and later released. The investigation remains ongoing, and no charges have been announced.
Ivory Coast’s federation said it had not received formal notification of proceedings involving Wahi and expressed its support for the player.

South Korea came from behind to defeat Czechia 2-1 in their opener. They will also qualify for the knockout stage with a win but have never beaten CONCACAF opposition at a World Cup.
Mexico have won both previous World Cup meetings between the teams and are unbeaten in their last four matches against South Korea.
Raúl Jiménez scored against South Africa and has also found the net in Mexico’s last two games against South Korea. Hwang In-beom contributed a goal and an assist in South Korea’s opening victory.
Mexico defender César Montes is suspended after his red card against South Africa, while South Korea are monitoring Kim Tae-hyeon.
