What happens if Austria wins, loses or draws? How about Algeria? – USA Today

June 28, 2026 by quixnet

It’s the final day of group stage play at the 2026 World Cup and it’s all or nothing between Algeria and Austria.
Both teams are currently in action in the second half on FS1 and Fubo to determine the standings in the round of 32.
There’s a lot on the line. The winner of the match secures second place in Group J. However, one, or both teams, will have the chance to advance to what comes next: the round of 32.
Here’s the breakdown. It’s simple, really.
Whoever wins is named runner-up in the group and will advance. The loser is done and goes home.
However, if the game ends in a draw, then both teams with advance to the round of 32. The score between Algeria and Austria is currently 2-2 in the second half in an exciting match between both nations.
If Algeria comes out victorious, they will finish in second in Group J with six points and automatically advance to the round of 32.
In the following round, the Desert Foxes will face the winner of Group H ― Spain.
Austria also has the chance to become the runner-up with a win against Algeria. They would face the Group H winner, Spain, in the round of 32.
If the match between Algeria and Austria ends in a draw, then both teams will advance to the round of 32. Austria would likely play Spain, while Algeria would face Switzerland or the Group A winner, currently expected to be Mexico.
