Iran targeted the world’s busiest international airport Wednesday and attacked commercial ships as U.S. and Israeli strikes rocked Tehran, while the United Nations’ most powerful body demanded a halt to the Islamic Republic’s strikes on its Gulf neighbors that threaten global oil supplies. The latest attacks marked an escalation in Iran’s campaign aimed at generating enough global economic pain to pressure the United States and Israel to end the war that started 12 days ago. But there were no signs that the conflict was subsiding. On Thursday, an Iranian attack sparked a major fire on an island that’s home to Bahrain’s international airport. Also, an attack on Iraq’s Basra port killed one person and forced a halt to operations at oil terminals.
The U.S.-Israeli war with Iran has become a test of who endures longer. The biggest pressure point appears to be the global economy, as oil prices surge. Iran attacked commercial shipping around the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, setting a Thai cargo ship on fire, and Iranian drones also targeted Dubai’s airport. The U.S. campaign of airstrikes is now in its 12th day, and Israel is also striking inside Iran while hitting what it says are Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. Separately, an Israeli assessment says Iran’s new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, was wounded early in the conflict.

Outdated intelligence has likely led to the United States carrying out a deadly missile strike on an elementary school in Iran that killed over 165 people, many of them children, in the opening hours of the conflict, according to a U.S. official and a second person briefed on findings of a preliminary U.S military investigation into the incident. Now, dozens of Democratic senators are demanding answers from the Trump administration. The letter from more than 45 senators pressed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on whether the U.S. was, in fact, culpable. The senators also raised concerns about the hollowing out of a congressionally mandated office set up specifically to reduce civilian casualties.

President Donald Trump used a swing through Ohio and Kentucky to push an economic message and attack fellow Republican Rep. Thomas Massie — even as the conflict in Iran threatened to overshadow all else. On Wednesday, Trump talked in Ohio about pressuring drugmakers to cut prices. He acknowledged that fighting involving Iran has shaken markets, but insisted he remains confident. At a later rally in Massie’s northern Kentucky district, Trump called Massie a “nutjob” and backed primary challenger Ed Gallrein. Trump also said he plans to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in an attempt to lower gas prices. Massie says Trump’s endorsement is all his opponent has.

House lawmakers are digging into Jeffrey Epstein’s sprawling financial portfolio. A committee deposed the late financier’s accountant on Wednesday. Richard Kahn worked closely with Epstein for years and now serves as an executor of his estate. He told lawmakers that he had not personally seen evidence of Epstein’s sexual abuse, but provided a fuller picture of how Epstein acquired his wealth. Lawmakers say that a better understanding of Epstein’s wealth could help the public understand how, for years, he was able to get away with trafficking and sexually abusing underage girls.
Some of the nation’s busiest airports saw hourslong security lines this weekend, as the partial government shutdown begins to hit air travel. Most checkpoints use federal TSA screeners, who must work without pay during shutdowns. San Francisco International Airport, however, uses a private screening contractor under TSA oversight, which keeps lines moving. Some experts say the model deserves a closer look as a way to protect airport security operations during lapses in funding. But the TSA union warns privatization could cut pay and protections for workers and introduce security risks. Travel industry groups are pushing another solution. They say Congress should pass legislation to keep aviation workers paid during shutdowns.

Tornadoes have killed at least two people in northwest Indiana and leveled buildings in Kankakee, Illinois. The Newton County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday identified an elderly couple killed in their Lake Village, Indiana home as Edward and Arlene Kozlowski. A volunteer fire department says less than 10 people were injured in Tuesday’s storms. In Illinois, the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office says a tornado caused extensive damage in the small suburb of Aroma Park, uprooting trees, shattering windows, tearing off roofs and smashing vehicles. Parts of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio remain under tornado watch Wednesday.
The Trump administration is opening a new trade investigation into manufacturing in foreign countries. It’s an effort that comes after the Supreme Court struck down President Donald Trump’s previous use of tariffs. Trump and his team have made clear that they’re seeking to replace the hundreds of billions of dollars in lost revenues by using different laws to establish new tariffs. The administration is starting investigations under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 to try to charge new import taxes. But U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told reporters that he didn’t want to prejudge the outcome of the process, even though he said that “the policy remains the same.”

When it comes to the war with Iran, President Donald Trump has cycled from calls for “unconditional surrender” to sounding amenable to an end state in which Iran trades one hard-line ayatollah for another. The shifting comments from the Republican president and his top aides have added to the precariousness of the 12-day-old conflict that’s affecting the Middle East and causing economic tremors around the globe. With neither side budging, the war is now on an unpredictable path and a credible endgame is unclear.

Documents released by the British government show officials believed there was a “reputational risk” in appointing Peter Mandelson as the U.S. ambassador because of his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The concerns were raised in a document sent to Prime Minister Keir Starmer in December 2024 before he appointed Mandelson to the role, seen as vital to establish a good relationship with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The document also spelled out other, unrelated reputational issues over Mandelson’s work in a previous Labour government related to financial matters, including high-profile donors. The 147-page release was published Wednesday on the government website.

Newly released surveillance video appears to show a man buying a fuse at a fireworks store days before authorities say he and another man brought homemade bombs to a protest outside the New York City mayor’s residence. Emir Balat, 18, visited a Phantom Fireworks store near his suburban Philadelphia home on March 2 and purchased 20 feet (6 meters) of consumer fireworks safety fuse, the company said Wednesday. Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, were arrested on Saturday after police said they attempted to set off a pair of improvised explosives at a small anti-Muslim rally near Gracie Mansion in Manhattan.
The U.S. stock market remained calm, even as the price of oil got back to rising. The S&P 500 edged down 0.1% Wednesday for a second day of modest moves following what had been a wild stretch caused by the war with Iran. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.6%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.1%. Oracle limited Wall Street’s losses after jumping following a strong profit report. Oil prices climbed even though the International Energy Agency said its members will release a record amount of crude from stockpiles set aside for emergencies. Treasury yields rose in the bond market.

Inflation stayed stubbornly elevated last month as gas prices rose in a snapshot of what consumer prices looked like before the U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran sent energy costs soaring. Wednesday’s data has been overtaken by the conflict that began when the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28, which has caused wild gyrations in oil prices as shipping lanes through the Persian Gulf have suffered a rare shutdown. Gas prices have already jumped and are expected to push inflation much higher when inflation data for this month is released in early April.
