The Kremlin has responded to the shooting of one its senior military officials this morning.
Vladimir Putin has been informed about the assassination attempt on Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev in Moscow, spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
“The special services are currently doing their job. The Kremlin wishes the general a speedy recovery.”
No one has so far claimed responsibility for the shooting, with the perpetrator still thought to be on the run.

Sweden will provide $100m (£74m) worth of support for Ukraine’s energy and heating needs, its prime minster has announced.
Ulf Kristersson said yesterday he was “appalled” by Russia’s destruction of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure that was “deliberately causing a humanitarian crisis”.
Ukraine has been enduring its most bitter winter since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.
Temperatures in parts of the country have fallen below -20C as constant Russian strikes have placed a major strain on services, with many people forced to shelter in emergency tents during power blackouts.
“I spoke with [Volodomyr Zelenskyy] today and informed him that Sweden will provide approx. 95 million euro to meet immediate needs, such as provision of generators and heating equipment,” he said on social media.
In his own post on the funding, Zelesnkyy thanked Sweden for the support and said the pair discussed bolstering air defence during a call yesterday.

The 64-year-old is responsible for intelligence and preparation of data for missile and air strikes on Ukraine, and for organizing ‘referendums’ in the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine, the Suspilne news agency reported.
A number of senior Russian military officials have been assassinated since the start of the war in Ukraine, including two last year.

22 December 2025 – Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was killed by a bomb that exploded under his Kia Sorento in southern Moscow. Sarvarov was head of the Russian General Staff’s army operational training directorate.
25 April 2025 – Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, 59, was killed by a car bomb near Moscow. Moskalik was deputy head of the main operations directorate of the general staff.
17 December 2024 – Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, who was chief of Russia’s nuclear, biological and chemical protection troops, was killed outside a Moscow apartment building along with his assistant when a bomb hidden in an electric scooter went off.
13 November 2024 – A bomb planted under a car killed a Russian serviceman in Sevastopol in Russia-annexed Crimea. A Ukrainian security source named him as Valery Trankovsky, a Russian naval captain whom Kyiv accused of war crimes for ordering missile strikes on civilian targets.
11 July 2023 – Russian military officer Stanislav Rzhitsky, who had commanded a submarine in the Black Sea and appeared on a Ukrainian blacklist of alleged war criminals, was shot dead while out on a morning run in the southern city of Krasnodar.
A senior Russian military official is in hospital after being shot in an assassination attempt in Moscow.
An unknown assailant fired several shots at Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev in a residential building on the Volokolamskoye Highway in the northwest of the city this morning before they fled, the Russian Investigative Committee said in a statement.
Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and a search to find the perpetrator is under way.
Alexeyev is deputy chief of the main directorate of general staff at the Russian Defence Ministry.
As another round of peace talks ended in the Middle East, three people were killed in more widespread Russian shelling and drone attacks across Ukraine.
A married couple, a 49-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman, were killed after private house was destroyed in a drone attack in the town of Vilniansk in the central Zaporizhzhia region, nationwide public broadcaster Suspilne reported.
Ukraine’s emergency service said a man was also killed while four more people were injured in shelling across a number of towns in the neighbouring Dnipropetrovsk region.
Two private houses were destroyed and six high-rise buildings were damaged in the attack.
Ukraine, Russia and the US concluded two days of peace talks in Abu Dhabi yesterday, with US envoy Steve Witkoff describing discussions as “detailed and productive”.
Volodomyr Zelenskyy said last night he was awaiting a full in-person report of the talks from his returning delegation.
“What can already be said is that further meetings are planned in the near future, likely in the United States,” he posted on social media.
It is crucial the war in Ukraine ends in a way that leaves Russia with “no reward” for its aggression, Zelenskyy added.
