Thanks for following our live coverage of the war in Ukraine, we’re pausing our updates for now.
Before we go, here’s a round-up of the day’s top lines:
If you’re just catching up with our coverage, you can read our rundown of the key things to look out for in the coming days by tapping below…
The European Parliament will be holding a vote on Wednesday over the EU’s €90bn (£78.4bn) loan for Ukraine.
Voting had been expected to take place later this month, but has since been moved forward.
Spokesperson Delphine Colard said “there is an agreement among the political groups”.
Politico reports that the centre-right European People’s Party, the centre-left Socialists and Democrats, and the liberal Renew Europe all agreed to fast-track votes, meaning it will get the majority it needs to pass.
Ukraine would have risked running out of cash as early as April without the loan, the report adds.
Back to the battlefield now, and Russian forces are trying to push forward in the city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine.
Kyiv’s general staff said its forces still hold the northern part of the city and were defending the smaller city of Myrnohrad nearby.
Any potential fall of Pokrovsk would mark Russia’s biggest capture on the battlefield since it seized the eastern city of Avdiivka at the start of 2024.
Moscow claimed to have captured Pokrovsk late last year, which Ukraine denied.
Ukrainian open-source researchers DeepState said Russian infantry has been moving into the northern ‍part of Pokrovsk and attempting to push further towards the nearby village of Hryshyn.
Since early 2023, analysts say Russia has captured around 1.3% of Ukrainian territory.
Ukraine’s state emergency service has shared these pictures after a Russian strike hit a train in the Sumy region.
“As a result of a UAV hitting the territory of the railway station, an electric train caught fire,” it said in a statement.
There were no injuries, and the service says rescuers extinguished the fire “quickly”.
As the war rages on, 46 Ukrainian athletes are representing their country at the Winter Olympics.
Skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych has been pictured during a training session wearing a helmet which pays tribute to those killed in the war.
He told Reuters that many of those on his helmet were Ukrainian athletes.
It’s not the first time he’s spoken out against Moscow’s aggression either – at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, days before Russia’s invasion, he held up a sign reading “no war in Ukraine”.
Russian strikes have targeted Ukraine’s state-run oil and gas company Naftogaz Group in the northeastern regions of Poltava and Sumy, according to the group’s chief executive.
Sergii Koretskyy says on social media that the facilities in the Poltava region came under attack for a second day in a row.
He adds that it was the 20th attack on the company’s infrastructure since the start of the year.
The European Commission has proposed its latest sanctions package against Russia for its ongoing war in Ukraine.
The sanctions, which are the 20th since the war began, target energy, financial services and trade.
For the first time, the package includes sanctions on third-country ports.
The ports of Kulevi in Georgia and Karimun in Indonesia have been targeted for handling Russian oil exports.
Meanwhile, 42 new vessels – mainly oil tankers in Russia’s shadow fleet – are included in the list of sanctions.
There are also proposals to remove sanctions from two Chinese banks and to add banks from Laos, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan for providing crypto asset services to Russia.
Kyiv’s mayor Vitaliy Klitschko has been speaking about the situation in Ukraine to the foreign affairs committee in Westminster this afternoon.
If you’re just catching up with our coverage, here’s a round-up of what he told MPs in a virtual appearance from Ukraine’s capital:
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has posted a message of support for Sir Keir Starmer on social media as he faces mounting pressure to resign.
Cooper says the prime minister “will lead our delegation to the Munich Security Conference” later this week.
“At this crucial time for the world, we need his leadership not just at home but on the global stage, and we need to keep our focus where it matters, on keeping our country safe,” she adds on social media.
Cooper’s support comes after Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar called for Starmer to step down as PM today, over his appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK ambassador to the US last year, despite his links to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
The Munich meeting gets under way on Friday and will include 15 prime ministers and heads of state from the European Union as well as a large US delegation.
The war in Ukraine is likely to take centre stage during discussions, after Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested at the weekend that the US wants a peace agreement wrapped up by June.
We’ve been hearing from the mayor of Kyiv – and today Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also given an update on the “most difficult circumstances” in Ukraine’s capital.
“More than 1,400 apartment buildings in Kyiv are without heating and it is important that people from each such building receive all the necessary support,” he says on Telegram.
“The volume of the heat package program will reach the volume of distribution of 40 thousand such packages to people and a significant part of it is in Kyiv.”
Zelenskyy says Russia is continually targeting Ukraine’s nuclear generation facilities and he has spoken with the country’s energy minister to discuss ways to better safeguard the plants.
“There should be clear answers to every Russian attempt to break Ukraine and Ukrainians,” he adds.
We reported at 13.52 that Kyiv’s mayor Vitaliy Klitschko told the UK’s foreign affairs committee that “we are fighting to survive” as Russia continues its bombardment of the city.
