Ukraine has agreed to the peace proposal brokered by the Trump administration, with some minor details still to be worked out, according to US media reports, citing US officials.
Washington sent its initial 28-point peace plan to Kyiv last week, before officials from both countries drafted a counterproposal at crisis talks in Geneva at the weekend.
European allies, who put forward their own counterproposal to the 28-point plan, have hastily arranged a number of meetings in recent days in an effort to keep pace with negotiations.
It comes after reports that US and Russian officials, including US Army secretary Dan Driscoll, were meeting for talks in Abu Dhabi today.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is delivering a statement on Ukraine to the House of Commons.
He says the initial US 28-point peace plan draft included points that were “not acceptable”, but also had some very important elements “that will be essential for a just and lasting peace.”
He repeats a line he used yesterday, saying those two words were important – and any deal to end the war must be both “just” and “lasting”.
The discussions in Geneva over the weekend took “important steps forward” with progress between the US and Ukraine on an updated peace framework, Starmer says.
“I can reassure the House that work is ongoing to refine this plan,” the prime minister adds.
A just and lasting peace can only happen if certain conditions are met, Starmer says. These are:
Starmer also insists that there is “still a long way to go and tough road ahead”.
But he says the government is “more committed than ever to this cause”.
Speaking about Russia, the prime minister told MPs that there’s “only one nation that wants this war, only one nation that launched this illegal invasion”.
Starmer also said of Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Russian casualties in the war: “In total, more than one million Russians have been killed or injured – all because of the depraved ambitions of one man.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is about to update MPs in the House of Commons on the Ukraine peace plan talks, and his visit to the G20 summit in South Africa at the weekend.

The Polish defence minister has called on NATO to work faster on strengthening its drone protection in eastern Europe, after multiple Russian drones crossed into Moldova and Romania (see 08.45 post).
“Operation Eastern Sentry requires reinforcement. Eight countries have declared their forces, this must be accelerated,”  Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said.
“This is also a conclusion if this violation is confirmed today.”
The Romanian defence ministry said it was forced to scramble jets after two drones breached its airspace near its border with Ukraine.
For context: Last month, the European Commission outlined the European Drone Defence Initiative – previously known as a “drone wall” – and Eastern Flank Watch as two of its flagship defence projects in a drive to get the continent ready to defend itself by 2030.
The Commission, the EU’s executive body, said both projects should have initial capacity by the end of next year.
It said the drone project should be fully functional a year later and “flank watch” should reach that status at the end of 2028.
Our Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett says shuttle diplomacy continues apace today as US officials try to maintain momentum for the peace talks by reportedly meeting Russia in Abu Dhabi.
“It seems pretty clear that the US is putting a concerted push behind these efforts to reach a resolution to the conflict.
“They believe there is some sort of middle ground that they can reach and get things over the line, potentially within days. That’s the hope from Donald Trump.”
However, with Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov making it pretty clear the Kremlin won’t accept a reported 19-point counterproposal, “it doesn’t seem like much has changed,” he adds.

Images are coming through this morning of the destruction in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv after heavy Russian strikes overnight.
Mangled vehicles and craters lie outside a major logistics centre in the city, while the sides of apartment buildings have been gutted.
As we’ve been reporting, at least six people were killed in the missile and drone attacks on Kyiv, according to its mayor.
The 28-point US peace plan has now become 19 points, according to reports.
The proposal has been significantly changed after negotiations in Geneva with Ukraine and European allies, two officials told The Washington Post.
The first draft, reportedly created after a meeting between a Russian official and a US envoy, had endorsed many of Moscow’s key demands, but the new version is apparently more aligned with Ukraine’s aims.
The text was no longer an ultimatum, but something Kyiv could consider, the Post reported.
One European diplomat said there was a sense of “mystery around the current phase of negotiations” between the US and Ukraine.
Issues of territory will come down to talks between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy himself, having not authorised anyone else to negotiate land.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he has had a “very productive” phone call with Sir Keir Starmer.
“We see many prospects that can make the path to peace real,” he says.
“There are solid results [from Geneva], and much work still lies ahead.”
The pair spoke ahead of a meeting of the “coalition of the willing” – a group of Ukraine’s Western allies – this afternoon.
“I thanked the prime minister for the condolences he expressed to the Ukrainian people,” Zelenskyy says.
“Last night, Russia launched another attack – at a time when Ukraine, together with America, Europe and many others around the world, are working virtually around the clock to stop the bloodshed.”
At least six people were killed in Russian attacks overnight.
A senior official for the United Arab Emirates has been asked about reported talks between US, Ukrainian and Russian officials in Abu Dhabi.
Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said he would not comment on Russia or Ukraine, but the UAE was happy to facilitate in every way it can.
Earlier, the Kremlin said it had “nothing to say” on the talks that reportedly include US army secretary Dan Driscoll.
Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov is speaking to reporters after meeting his Belarusian counterpart.
He says that while Moscow welcomes the original 28-point peace plan, it will be a “completely different situation” if amendments do not reflect the spirit and letter of talks between Putin and Trump in Alaska.
Russia is waiting for what Lavrov called an “interim” proposal, following European and Ukrainian alterations.
