Vladimir Putin’s forces have made movements in eastern Ukraine as Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Moscow are “making movements that indicate preparations for new offensive operations.”
Russian forces made a “sudden thrust into eastern Ukraine, east of the mining down of Dobropillia”, reported Reuters, who added that Ukrainian and Russian military bloggers had warned this could cause serious problems for Kyiv.
Ukraine’s DeepState war map, using open source data, showed on Tuesday that Russian forces had quickly advanced north in two prongs covering as much as 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), part of their drive to take full control of Ukraine’s Donetsk region.
DeepState said they had advanced near three villages on a section of the frontline associated with the two Ukrainian cities of Pokrovsk and Kostyantynivka.
Russia’s movements come days ahead of a summit in Alaska between Trump and Putin where the two leaders are set to discuss an end to the war in Ukraine, with the US president already warning there will be “land swapping” between the warring nations.
Zelensky said: “we all support President Trump’s determination, and together we must shape positions that will not allow Russia to deceive the world once again.”
Spanish prime minister Pedro Sanchez has reaffirmed support for Ukraine following a statement from European leaders this morning.
“The priority is to end the war,” he said on social media. “Achieve a just and lasting peace and security for Ukraine.
“The Ukrainian people have the support of Spain and the European Union. United in favor of a diplomatic solution that protects the vital security interests of Ukraine and Europe.”

The Russian thrust comes days ahead of a summit in Alaska on Friday between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin where the two leaders are expected to discuss a possible deal to end the war in Ukraine.
Tatarigami_UA, a former Ukrainian army officer whose Frontelligence Insight analysis tracks the conflict closely, said the Russian move had the potential to escalate dangerously if not nipped in the bud.
“This is critical. In both 2014 and 2015, Russia launched major offensives ahead of negotiations to gain leverage. The current situation is serious, but far from the collapse some suggest,” Tatarigami wrote on X.
Hungary’s prime minister Viktor Orban has shared his reasons for not supporting a statement from fellow EU leaders, hitting back at “the liberal-mainstream chorus begins its newest rendition of their favourite ‘Putin’s puppet’ tune”.
He said on social media: “The statement attempts to set conditions for a meeting to which leaders of the EU were not invited,” referring to the Trump-Putin summit on Friday.
“The fact that the EU was left on the sidelines is sad enough as it is. The only thing that could make things worse is if we started providing instructions from the bench”, he added, before concluding: “The only sensible action for EU leaders is to initiate an EU-Russia summit, based on the example of the US-Russia meeting. Let’s give peace a chance!”
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that Russia was preparing for new offensive operations just days before US president Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin were due to meet.
“We see that the Russian army is not preparing to end the war. On the contrary, they are making movements that indicate preparations for new offensive operations,” he wrote on X, without elaborating on the location.
“In such circumstances, it is important that the unity of the world is not threatened.”
Polish prime minister Donald Tusk has warned that Russia is doing everything it can to sow seeds of discord between Kyiv and Warsaw as a resolution to the war appears fast-approaching with the Trump-Putin summit on Friday.
Mr Tusk posted: “The resolution of the Ukrainian war is approaching, so Russia is doing everything to sow discord between Kyiv and Warsaw.
“Anti-Polish gestures by Ukrainians and fueling anti-Ukrainian sentiments in Poland are Putin’s scenario, orchestrated by foreign agents and local idiots. Always the same ones.”
