President Donald Trump called Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie to offer words of support as the search continues for her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie.
“After President Trump’s interview with NBC News, he called Savannah Guthrie, offering words of support for her and her family during the search for her mother,” the White House said in a statement posted Wednesday.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has said Nancy was abducted from her Arizona home, where she was last seen Saturday night. Investigators have yet to identify a suspect or person of interest in the case, Nanos said Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Arizona news networks KGUN 9 and KOLD, along with TMZ, have reported receiving ransom notes for Nancy. TMZ and KGUN 9 reported that the notes demanded millions of dollars in Bitcoin for her safe return.
When asked about one of the notes that was sent to an Arizona news station, Nanos told CBS News he has shown it to Savannah and her family.
“When the note comes to us, it’s like any piece of evidence. You give it to us, you give us a lead, we’re going to look at every aspect of that lead,” he said.
Nanos said Tuesday his office is “aware” of reports about “possible ransom note(s),” and that investigators are “taking all tips and leads very seriously.”
Candice DeLong, a former FBI criminal profiler, told CNN’s Jake Tapper Wednesday that Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance is not a “kiddie crime.”
“This looks to me like it was committed by people that have experience committing other crimes. This is not what we call a kiddie crime,” DeLong said.
Nancy vanished from her Arizona home Saturday night. Police believe she was abducted while she slept.
DeLong said it doesn’t appear to be a kidnapping by a couple of teenagers looking to get some money.
“If that were the case, I think, something would’ve happened by now,” she told Tapper.
A CNN analyst has reacted to an update in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, in which police said they have “not identified a suspect or person of interest.”
John Miller, CNN chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst, told TV host Jake Tapper Wednesday that authorities usually only identify a suspect in a case “if there is a compelling reason to or because they need the public’s assistance in locating that person.”
“You’re not a suspect until you’re named as a suspect, which is usually right before you’re charged — I don’t think they’re there yet,” Miller added.
Here is a timeline of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, according to CNN:
NewsNation’s Brian Entin reported Wednesday evening that investigators are putting crime scene tape back up at Nancy Guthrie’s home.
“About a dozen sheriff’s deputies and FBI, I think FBI, showed up here,” Entin said in a video posted to X.
There were also K9s and search teams on the Arizona property, according to Entin. Nancy vanished from her home in the Catalina Foothills on Saturday night.
“We don’t really know what’s going on because it’s been quiet here for the last couple of days, but now, clearly, they are about to do something at the house,” Entin said.
Nancy Guthrie vanished from her home in the Catalina Foothills, just outside of Tucson, Arizona, Saturday night.
Her spacious brick house is separated from neighbors, with desert vegetation partially blocking the street view, the Associated Press reports.
The AP said her neighborhood appears to have little street lighting at night.
Nancy was taken from her while she slept, according to local authorities.
President Donald Trump called Savannah Guthrie on Wednesday to offer words of support as the search continues for her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie.
“After President Trump’s interview with NBC News, he called Savannah Guthrie, offering words of support for her and her family during the search for her mother,” the White House said in a statement posted Wednesday.
The president told Savannah he knows she is close with her mother, and assured her that federal resources are available as needed, according to NBC News. The Today show co-host thanked Trump for the call and expressed her gratitude for the local and federal officials who are working on the case, the outlet reports.
Trump called the case “terrible” as he spoke to reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday. Earlier that day, the White House shared a plea for information on Nancy’s whereabouts.
“The search for Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, is ongoing, and authorities are requesting assistance from the public. Anyone with information is urged to contact 911. Our prayers are with the Guthrie family as we hope for Nancy’s safe return home,” the White House said in a statement.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told The New York Times that “time is not on our side” as he spoke about the search for Nancy Guthrie.
This comes after he warned of potentially “fatal” consequences if Nancy doesn’t have access to her daily medication.
The search has been ongoing for four days. Police have yet to identify a suspect or person of interest, Nanos said Wednesday.
