Heat, Humidity Relief For Millions In August
We kicked off another week of weather without a hurricane impacting the U.S., but still numerous compelling weather stories, including a taste of fall and other happenings in the tropics around the globe.
Here's a look at what we tracked Monday:
From senior writer Chris DeWeese:
Here’s something kind of neat that we spotted on weather radar in the Great Lakes region this morning: “roost rings,” caused by very large flocks of birds taking off around sunrise. It’s a reminder that, even though it’s still August, some of these birds have already begun their migrations south from northern Canada.

Places like Seattle and Portland have been breaking records since last Friday and we aren’t done yet. Check out these broken records yesterday:
Both cities have record highs in jeopardy once again today as extreme heat warnings continue. This is especially dangerous since not all homes have air conditioning. As noted on the Weather Channel, the number of homes with air conditioning across the Pacific Northwest continues to increase, but only about 53% of homes in Seattle have A/C.
Heat relief arrives Wednesday as temperatures drop back down to seasonal averages this time of year with Seattle in the upper 70s and Portland in the lower 80s.
From digital meteorologist Caitlin Kaiser:
As we head into the busiest month of the Atlantic hurricane season, it’s good to step back and get some perspective on where we stand in regards to climatology.
With Tropical Storm Fernand getting named over the weekend, we have now seen six named storms so far this season. Based on the average from 1991-2020, the sixth named storm normally makes its appearance on Aug. 29, so we are right about on track in terms of named storms.
But in terms of hurricanes, it’s a bit of a different story. Erin became the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season on August 15. But since then, we have not seen another storm make a run at hurricane strength. With no other prospects on our radar for the next week or so, this makes us a bit behind the historical average of Aug. 26 for our second hurricane.
And with Erin’s explosive rapid intensification over a week ago, we are ahead of schedule in terms of major hurricanes. We typically don’t see our first one until Sep. 1.

From producer Carmen Molina:
Last Thursday and Friday, Santiago de Chile's eastern metropolitan area (pre-cordillera) experienced their heaviest snowfall since 2017. This past weekend, the clear blue skies revealed enchanting views of the snow-covered mountains, as the video below shared by the Municipality of Ñuñoa illustrated.

From meteorologist Jennifer Gray:
Some of the coolest temperatures of the season are sweeping into the U.S. this week, bringing the first taste of fall to everyone from the Midwest to parts of the South. Temperatures will be running as much as 25 degrees below normal, as dozens of records could possibly fall in this late August cooldown. Time out the arrival of the cooler temperatures here.
From senior writer Chris DeWeese:
Across much of the Northern Hemisphere, we have now entered peak sunflower season, as thousands flock to admire the amazing plants, and, quite frankly, pose for pictures amid them. These two sunflower enthusiasts posed in a sunflower field south of Birmingham, England, today. We highly applaud the parasol, which, in addition to looking stylish, affords some key mid-day sun protection.

From digital meteorologist Caitlin Kaiser:
Early Monday morning, Juliette became the tenth tropical storm of the 2025 Eastern Pacific hurricane season. Some strengthening is forecast through Tuesday with weakening expected to begin on Wednesday.
The storm is not expected to bring any direct impact to land at this time – making Juliette what we meteorologists refer to as a fish storm.

From managing editor Sean Breslin:
One of the biggest stories we’re following this morning is the so-called Pickett Fire, which has hundreds of residents under evacuation orders or warnings in parts of Northern California’s Wine Country. The blaze has burned about 10 square miles and is 11% contained in Napa County. We have all the latest information at this link.

From meteorologist Tiffany Savona:
It’s definitely sweater weather for some in the northern U.S., especially across the arrowhead of Minnesota where frost advisories were in effect this morning. And rightfully so as International Falls and Hibbing both dipped to 36 degrees.
You may think this is unusual for late August. But it’s not. The average date of the first frost in Hibbing is August 22 and in International Falls is August 25, which is today.

It may be the heart of hurricane season, but the Atlantic Basin is quieter than last week. Tropical Storm Fernand is no threat to land and will be a non-tropical low in 48 hours or fewer. And the tropical wave we had been tracking for days that's now in the eastern Caribbean Sea is not expected to develop due to strong wind shear.
It may be at least a week or two until the Atlantic hurricane season wakes back up again. In the words of the band Depeche Mode, "Enjoy the silence," for now, at least.
