Teenage gunmen kill three at San Diego mosque, police say – The Times

May 18, 2026 by quixnet

Three adult victims and two teenage suspects have died after a shooting at a mosque in San Diego, according to police.
Officers were called to a suspected active shooter at the mosque on Monday, as police said a number of people had been shot.
The attack, which took place at the Islamic Center of San Diego, was being considered a “hate crime”, Scott Wahl, the city’s police chief, said.
He added that the suspects, aged 19 and 17, died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds and were found in a vehicle near the mosque.
The three victims were all male, Wahl said, one of whom was a security guard for the mosque.
He said during a news conference on Monday afternoon that a landscaper was also shot at by the suspects but was unhurt.
President Trump called the incident a “terrible situation”.

The San Diego police department described the scene as “active but contained”. Police later said: “The threat at the Islamic Center has been neutralised.”
TV news footage showed more than a dozen children holding hands as they were being led out of a car park at the centre while surrounded by police vehicles.
Gavin Newsom’s office said the governor of California was being briefed. “We are grateful to the first responders on the scene working to protect the community and urge everyone to follow guidance from local authorities,” his office said.
Todd Gloria, the mayor of San Diego, said: “I am aware of the active-shooter situation at the Islamic Center of San Diego in Clairemont and am continuing to receive updates from law enforcement. Emergency personnel are on scene and actively working to protect the community and secure the area.”
According to its website, the Islamic Center is the largest mosque in San Diego County. The campus includes the Al Rashid School, which the website says offers courses in Arabic language, Islamic studies and the Quran.
The Islamic Center’s website says its mission is to not only serve the Muslim population but also “work with the larger community to serve the less fortunate, to educate and to better our nation”.
Five daily prayers are held there, and the mosque works with other organisations and people of all faiths on social causes.
