The U.S. Coast Guard has located a debris field off the coast of Nantucket from an air ambulance flight that lost contact with air traffic controllers Saturday morning, it said.
The search will continue throughout the night for the six people who were on board the aircraft, the Coast Guard said. Four Canadian nationals and two Bermudian nationals were on the plane, it said.
The Gulfstream G100 jet was en route to Boston from the island of Bermuda, the Coast Guard said earlier Saturday.
Air and surface crews were searching an area off the coast of Nantucket after it was informed at 2 a.m. that a jet had lost contact with air traffic controllers.
The plane was carrying out a medical evacuation in Bermuda, said Clarence Togeretz, the director of flight operations at Latitude Air Ambulance, which operates the plane.
Latitude Air Ambulance operates specially equipped private planes to transport and treat sick or injured people. It serves private clients, patients who required advanced care and insured patients who become critically ill or injured while abroad, according to the medical transportation company’s website.
The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that it issued a search-and-rescue notice for the jet at 1:20 a.m. ET Saturday.
Air traffic control tower audio from Boston, obtained by NBC News, appears to indicate that controllers asked the aircraft if it was “coming in blind.”
Controllers later ask another plane to “attempt contact” with the jet. It is unclear whether that attempt was successful.
Emergency services audio obtained by NBC News asked vessels to keep a “sharp lookout” for any signs of a “possible aircraft in the water.” Data from Flightradar24 showed a number of aircraft searching south of the island.
A spokesperson for the Massachusetts Port Authority, which operates Boston Logan International Airport, said: “Our thoughts are with those on board and their loved ones as the search continues.”
Bermuda is a British overseas territory in the North Atlantic, about 650 miles from North Carolina.
Bermuda Premier David Burt said in a statement that his “thoughts are with everyone on board and their families during this deeply worrying time.”
