Here’s what we know so far
And what we don’t know
Earlier we heard from witness Bill Bienemann, who said he heard 30 to 50 shots over several minutes.
Now his daughter has said she is worried her friends are among those injured or killed in the shooting.
Bienemann’s daughter, who went to the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis for nine years, says she heard there had been “several fatalities”.
“It breaks my heart,” she says. “It makes me sick to my stomach knowing that there’s probably people I know that are injured or maybe have been killed.
“It doesn’t make me feel safe at all in this community that I have been a part of for so long.
“Me and my friends were talking and we said this is like our version of 9/11.”
Bienemann’s daughter says the shooting would have taken place during “their first day of all-school mass”.
Parents have started to gather outside the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis as they wait for news.
The gunman has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, three law enforcement officials have told our US partner network NBC News.
A US Justice Department official says two people have been killed in the shooting at the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis.
The shooter has also died.
The official also says that 20 people have been injured.
A witness to the shooting has described hearing 30 to 50 shots over several minutes.
Bill Bienemann says he lives around two blocks from Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, where the shooting took place, and was on a call when he heard gunfire.
“I know what gunfire sounds like and I was shocked, I said there’s no way that could be gunfire, there was so much of it,” he says.
He says the gunfire was “sporadic” and semi-automatic, adding: “It seemed like a rifle, it certainly didn’t sound like a handgun, so he must have reloaded several times.”
Bienemann says he heard 30 to 50 shots over several minutes of shooting, saying three to four minutes “is a long time for live gunfire, you can rap off a lot of shots”.
The man says he has friends who know someone who was inside the building when the shooting took place who managed to run out, adding: “He said it seemed like it went on for an eternity, but when it stopped he just ran out of the building.”
