Police are investigating a violent shooting near a college campus as the city grapples with rising gun violence
Amass shooting occurred Wednesday afternoon near the College Park Apartments in Memphis, Tennessee, resulting in multiple casualties. Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers responded swiftly to reports of gunfire in the 900 block of College Park Drive, an area situated across from LeMoyne-Owen College and near the historic Elmwood Cemetery.
Upon arrival, officers discovered two men deceased-one at the scene and another who succumbed to injuries at a local hospital. Additionally, two other men and a woman sustained injuries and were transported to nearby medical facilities. The conditions of the injured individuals have not been disclosed at this time.
Authorities have not released information regarding potential suspects or motives. MPD has urged residents in the vicinity with surveillance systems to review their footage for any individuals approaching the residence prior to the incident. Community cooperation is deemed vital as the investigation progresses.
In response to the shooting, LeMoyne-Owen College issued a statement clarifying that the event occurred off-campus and did not involve any of its students, faculty, or staff. The institution emphasized that there are no current threats to campus safety, and operations continue as normal. Dr. Dunn-Ross, Chief Operating Officer of LeMoyne-Owen College, stated, “We are aware of the situation and in communication with local authorities. At this time, there is no threat to our campus, and operations will continue as normal.”
This incident adds to a troubling pattern of gun violence in Memphis. In September 2022, a shooting spree resulted in three fatalities and multiple injuries, leading to a citywide shelter-in-place order and an extensive manhunt. The suspect, Ezekiel Kelly, faces numerous charges, including first-degree murder
The MPD continues to investigate the current case, seeking assistance from the public. Residents with information are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH. Tips can remain anonymous, and there may be financial incentives for information leading to an arrest.
As the investigation unfolds, the community remains on edge, grappling with the aftermath of yet another act of violence. Local leaders and organizations are calling for increased efforts to address the root causes of such incidents and to implement strategies aimed at preventing future tragedies.
The MPD has assured the public that all necessary resources are being utilized to apprehend those responsible and to ensure the safety and security of the community. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
