“A noncompliant supertanker seeking to pass through the illegal southern route of the Strait of Hormuz struck two naval mines, suffered massive fires and was brought to a complete stop,” the IRGC said.
The IRGC Navy did not identify the vessel, its flag, cargo or crew, and provided no information about casualties.
It warned that other vessels violating its navigation rules would face the same fate and told shipping companies not to follow US military instructions.
Iran’s foreign ministry said on Monday that the country’s armed forces launched retaliatory strikes on US military bases as an act of self-defense following a US strike on Larak Island.
The ministry said the US strike on Sunday evening killed several military personnel and civilians, wounded several others and caused extensive property damage.
It said Iran’s forces subsequently carried out “defensive and deterrent strikes” against US bases involved in or supporting the attack.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to exercise its inherent right to legitimate defense and will respond decisively to every military aggression by the enemy,” it said.
The ministry added that Washington bore full responsibility for the consequences of the strike, its naval blockade and what Tehran calls an economic war. It also warned that countries assisting US operations would share responsibility.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran does not want war but would respond “decisively” to any attack.
“We are not seeking war, and this is a clear message we have conveyed to the world,” Pezeshkian said. “But we will never sit quietly in the face of any aggression and will respond decisively to the aggressors.”
He said instability and unrest in the region benefited no country and would create challenges for all.
Pezeshkian made the remarks as he left Tehran for Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to attend a summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization leaders.

US Central Command said Sunday’s attack on IRGC forces on Larak Island targeted an “imminent threat” to the Strait of Hormuz, rejecting Tehran’s characterization of the strike as an “act of aggression.”
CENTCOM said US forces took “limited, precise action” against Revolutionary Guards forces attempting to lay mines in the Strait.
“Iran created the threat and the US military eliminated it,” CENTCOM said, adding that the strike was intended to protect civilian mariners, commercial shipping and the flow of global commerce.
