Johns Hopkins University ranks No. 9 among national universities, according to the latest list of the nation’s best colleges for undergraduates published by U.S. News & World Report.
The annual rankings, released today, have Hopkins tied with two other schools at No. 9: Northwestern University and the University of Chicago.
Johns Hopkins has been included among the nation’s top 10 universities each year since 2019 and has been among the top 20 in all but one year since U.S. News launched its rankings in the 1980s.
In compiling its annual rankings, U.S. News incorporates 17 metrics including first-year retention rates, graduation rates, and post-graduation earnings to highlight colleges that excel in areas such as value, social mobility, and classroom experience. The rankings also recognize excellence across a range of academic disciplines, including engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence, economics, and psychology.
For the second year in a row, the publication ranked Hopkins No. 12 for value, based on a combination of academic quality factors and net cost of attendance. The university rose 20 places in the publication’s rankings for social mobility, a measure of institutions enrolling and graduating large proportions of students who are awarded Pell Grants.
Hopkins ranked No. 11 for innovation and moved up five spots to No. 4 in undergraduate research/creative projects, a reflection of the university’s longstanding commitment to providing students with opportunities to participate in projects outside the classroom. More than 90% of Hopkins undergraduates participate in at least one research experience during their time at the university, and students average 6 to 10 hours per week on their research endeavors, according to the Hopkins Office for Undergraduate Research.
Johns Hopkins moved up 26 spots on a select list recognizing colleges and universities that emphasize providing high-quality undergraduate instruction, based on a survey of academics asked to name the schools they believe have faculty and administrators with a remarkably strong commitment to undergraduate scholars.
This year, for the first time in many years, student indebtedness was not one of the factors used in the ranking. Hopkins has been a top three school for low student debt since 2022 and last year was listed as the national university where students graduated with the least debt in the country, according to U.S. News. This year, in place of student indebtedness, U.S. News added a factor on graduates’ earnings by major.
U.S. News recognized Hopkins as a national leader in several academic disciplines at the undergraduate level. The university ranks No. 1 in biomedical engineering, tied at No. 5 in biocomputing/bioinformatics/biotechnology, and No. 21 in artificial intelligence. The publication ranks graduate disciplines separately each spring.
