Israel’s former defence minister Yoav Gallant is among the first to publicly react to the US strikes.
He thanks Donald Trump for taking a “bold decision” for the US, Israel and “for all of humanity”.
The US attack on Iranian nuclear sites is a surprise, our US correspondent Mark Stone says.
Speaking from Washington, Stone says: “I don’t think from an American perspective, there was a sense that this would happen tonight.
“The vibes coming out of over the last day or so, were very much that Donald Trump was willing to give diplomacy a chance and that this whole thing of up to two weeks that he would at least, at least have given it more than a day or two.”
Stone adds that it will now be a wait to see how successful the strikes have been.
He says: “This is a dice roll for the president, for sure.
“I think American assets right across the region and bases, military personnel, other civilian targets that are seemed to be aligned with America, will now be, as far as the Iranians are concerned, fair game.
“This is a very, very a huge moment of jeopardy.
“What Donald Trump wants is a quick fix. And that social media spoke, post speaks to just that, a quick fix. ‘We’ve done it. We’ve hit them hard. That’s it. Line drawn. And now we want peace.’ That is his [Trump’s] hope.”
Donald Trump has shared a message from an open-source intelligence account saying that “Fordow is gone”.
The facility south of Tehran has already been the target of Israeli strikes since the start of the Israel-Iran over a week ago.
Donald Trump has said he will address the nation at 10pm local time (3am UK time) after the US conducted strikes on three of Iran’s nuclear sites.
In another post on Truth Social, the president said it was a “historic moment” for the US.
We will bring you all the latest from the White House when Trump begins to speak in just under two hours time.
President Donald Trump has said the US has struck three of Iran’s nuclear sites.
He said the Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan sites were targeted.
A US official told the Reuters news agency that two B-2 bombers were involved in the strikes.
Earlier this week, Trump said he would make a decision on whether to strike Iran “in the next two weeks” but yesterday, the US moved several of its B-2 bombers to the Pacific island of Guam.
This indicated that the US president may have been prepared to launch a strike sooner than expected.
The B-2 aircraft are capable of delivering the 30,000Ib bunker buster bombs needed to attack Fordow, the Iranian nuclear facility that is buried 300ft inside a mountain.
Donald Trump has said the US has completed a “very successful” attack on three nuclear sites in Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, the president said the Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan sites were targeted.
The president’s full post reads:
We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. All planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home. Congratulations to our great American Warriors. There is not another military in the World that could have done this. NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE! Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister has condemned what he called “blatant Israeli aggressions” against Iran.
Prince Faisal bin Farhan said attacks from Israel undermine Iran’s sovereignty and security and “constitute a clear violation of international laws and norms, and threaten the security and stability of the region”.
He went on to call for an “immediate cessation of military operations” while speaking at a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
For context: Iran and Saudi Arabia were rivals in the Middle Eastern region, but have normalised relations in recent years.
Riyadh was quick to side publicly with Tehran after Israel launched a barrage of strikes on Iran last week.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation is the second-largest organisation after the United Nations. It has 57 member states spread over four continents and aims to protect the interests of the Muslim world.
As we have been reporting, Donald Trump did not answer any questions after arriving back at the White House.
The president was expected to say something ahead of hosting a National Security Council meeting, which is closed to the press.
Watch the moment Trump walks across the lawn from Marine One and opts to hold up his fist to waiting media, rather than take any questions.
The bodyguard of the former leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike while in Iran, a Hezbollah official has said.
Abu Ali Khalil, better known as Abu Ali Jawad, was killed on Saturday after he went to Iran from neighbouring Iraq, the official said.
For many years, Abu Ali was seen behind Nasrallah – who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon in September – during most of his public appearances.
After Nasrallah’s death, Abu Ali was put in charge of his tomb in Lebanon’s capital, Beirut.
Iranian media is reporting the sound of explosions in the northwestern city of Tabriz.
The state-run Nour News also says explosions have been heard in the east of Tehran.
Earlier, we reported about Israeli strikes on the southern city of Shiraz, which hosts military bases (see 21.51 post).
The Mehr news agency said the city’s air defences have been activated and have been “engaged in fighting hostile targets and Zionist aircraft”.
