The Scenic City once again plays host to the International Bluegrass Music Association World of Bluegrass, which gets underway today, October 20, and runs through Saturday at the Chattanooga Convention Center.
This year’s keynote speaker is Tim Stafford, a Tennessee native, born in Kingsport. He’s played with many bands over the years, and in 1990, was hired by Alison Krauss for Union Station, which recorded the Grammy-winning album “Every Time You Say Goodbye.”
In 1994, he co-founded Blue Highway with Wayne Taylor, Shawn Lane, Rob Ickes and Jason Burleson.
Together, the band became one of bluegrass’s most decorated groups, earning three Grammy nominations, a Dove Award and 32 IBMA Awards. Stafford is also a songwriter, with more than 400 recorded songs, and was named IBMA Songwriter of the Year in 2014, 2017 and 2023 and co-wrote the 2008 IBMA Song of the Year, “Through the Window of a Train.”
Attendees can participate in the IBMA Songwriter Showcase, which spotlights exceptional original songwriting. Ten standout songs are selected, and their writers take the stage to perform for an audience of top bluegrass artists, producers, and fans. The songs are chosen through a juried selection process, taking such factors as the applicant’s quality of work and appeal to bluegrass audiences.
Another event is the IBMA Bluegrass Ramble, which features 30 official showcase artists at different venues in downtown Chattanooga for two nights of live music.
As if that weren’t quite enough, there’s the IMBA Bluegrass Live, featuring more artists, interviews and music.
Tickets can be purchased on the IBMA World of Bluegrass website.
