Welcome to September, Daily Briefing readers.

Flooding at the Grand Canyon has left at least two people dead and at least one person unaccounted for, according to the National Park Service. The park’s chief ranger said it’s unclear if there were additional day hikers missing.
The cause: As rain falls on the dry, arid slopes in the region, large volumes of water can quickly flow into creeks and waterways. Burn scars on the landscape wildfires rapidly funnel water into downslope torrents.
Have a trip planned? The Canyon as a whole remains open for visitors with partial closures and restrictions.
Take a look
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman bring the Owens sisters back in “Practical Magic 2,” the long-awaited sequel to the 1998 film.
Things to talk about
Ten-year-old Charlotte has the mental capacity of a 12-18 month old, and likely will for the rest of her life. Her public school district recommended months ago that she switch to a private, residential school. But her parents, Matthew Lange-Geise and Christina Hartman, say it could take several more months, or even years, before they find a school that can serve Charlotte.
