Daily Briefing: USA reaches World Cup round of 16 – USA Today

July 3, 2026 by quixnet

Welcome to the Daily Briefing. Start with these reads:
Nicole Fallert here, bringing you the news to know on Thursday.
Time to get your Team USA gear ready. The U.S. men’s national team turned in a gritty performance yesterday despite being down a player, defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the World Cup round of 32. It was the USMNT’s first win in a World Cup knockout round game since 2002, and their 10 goals so far are now a USMNT record for the entire tournament.
The USMNT will now move on to face Belgium on Monday in the round of 16 in Seattle — but without Folarin Balogun after he was dealt a red card. Balogun was sent off in a controversial decision that has drawn plenty of outrage.

An uncirculated set of coins featuring change marking America’s 250th birthday is now available ahead of the nation’s anniversary on July 4.
Something to talk about
Some people might call Robin Byrd a pleasure activist. Byrd spoke to USA TODAY about how she became a trailblazer for late-night TV and sex positivity: “I’m not your typical woman. I don’t see other women doing what I did or what I’ve done.”
