Welcome to the Daily Briefing. Start the day with these stories:
Nicole Fallert here, bringing you the news to know on Thursday, from a race to work in Washington to a golf emergency.
The winner of a special election in New Jersey on Thursday will head to Washington to represent the state’s 11th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Why is there a special election? A House seat was vacated by Democrat Mikie Sherrill, now the New Jersey governor, who resigned in November 2025 to run in the gubernatorial election.
Who’s running? Joe Hathaway, who is viewed as a moderate Republican; Analilia Mejia, a progressive Democrat; and Alan Bond, an independent.
Why the race matters: Mejia is favored to win the heavily-Democratic district, but either way, the winner will bring a new face to the House, where Speaker Mike Johnson balances a thin GOP majority and intends to pursue a hardline second-term agenda for Trump. And this isn’t the only Congressional replacement race of the year, and House resignations just opened up two more seats.
