Daily Briefing: Cheers of joy for the gun silencer – USA Today

August 15, 2026 by quixnet

Welcome to the Daily Briefing. Happy Friday!
Nicole Fallert here, designing my dream cozy backyard.
A group of gun rights supporters gathered just after midnight last night to celebrate. Among them was Brandon Herrera, a 30-year-old YouTuber and Texas congressional candidate. He bought an unregistered silencer, eliciting cheers at a shop in Leander, Texas.
Gun advocates have long decried the added layers of fees and regulation that apply to devices like suppressors, or silencers that muffle the noise when a gun is fired. This week, a federal injunction took effect, invalidating a narrow portion of the law for the people who sued over it. Leading gun safety groups balked at the decision by the DOJ to let the law lapse.
MLB
MLB brought out 26 Hall of Famers to appear out of the corn stalks Thursday night, when the Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins played at the “Field of Dreams” stadium, the site made famous by the 1989 Kevin Costner film.
Something to talk about
A $1 billion ticket was sold this week at a Hy-Vee gas station in Quincy, Illinois. But what about the fabled lottery curse? Powerball winners, common wisdom suggests, live a shattered life: Some squander their fortune or wind up in prison. We wanted to know if the lottery curse was real: USA TODAY tracked the fortunes of more than 30 lottery winners over time.
