Daily Briefing: A Georgia GOP runoff – USA Today

June 17, 2026 by quixnet

Welcome to the Daily Briefing. Start with these reads:
Nicole Fallert here. “Love Island” in movie theaters is practically too much of a good thing. We have the news to know on Tuesday, including a packed summer day of elections and a not-so-blue reflecting pool on the National Mall.
A busy cycle of primary contests continues across the country. Elections are set across four states and Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, with Georgia and Alabama hosting primary runoffs on for some House and Senate races. Whoever wins the runoffs will be on the November ballot as President Donald Trump and the GOP aim to hold onto a narrow majority on Capitol Hill.
One race to watch: Two GOP candidates, Rep. Mike Collins (who is backed by Trump) and college football coach Derek Dooley, go head-to-head in Georgia today after neither candidate secured more than 50% of the vote in the May 19 primary. The winner will face incumbent Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in what is set to be one of the most closely-watched races of the midterms.
Take a look
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has become overrun with algae just days after the landmark underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation, leaving visitors wondering if it will be cleared in time for 4th of July celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary.
World Cup
USMNT’s Christian Pulisic has played in the world’s best leagues and scored goals in bunches for AC Milan, one of the most storied teams in the game. But Pulisic was substituted at halftime of the U.S. men’s national team‘s World Cup opener after getting kicked in the left calf. But teammate Adams downplayed fears it could keep Pulisic out of the USMNT’s next game against Australia on June 19. If USMNT falters, the burden could fall on Pulisic’s shoulders.
