TULSA, Okla. — The City of Tulsa is now a new world record holder.
The Guinness World Records announced today that Tulsa now holds the record for hosting the largest parade of classic cars with a record shattering 3,596 vehicles that participated in Tulsa's Route 66 Capital Cruise.
The previous record holder was held by Puerto Rico in 2017 with 2,491 vehicles.
Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichols was in attendance today serving as the Grand Marshal of the event and was presented with the certificate.
"It was an honor to serve as a Grand Marshal for today’s historic event," Nichols said in a social media post. "I got the chance to meet people from across the United States and around the world who came together to celebrate the legacy of Route 66 right here in Tulsa."
Drivers from 42 states as well as Canada and France participated in the Capital Cruise.
“All I can say is, ‘Of course we did!’ Because Tulsa has never relented its spirit when it sets its mind to a thing,” said Tulsa Route 66 Commission Chair, Tulsa City Council Vice Chair and Tulsa City Councilor for District 6 Christian Bengel. “It’s who we are. I always believed we would set the record, but never in my own vision of its grandeur and splendor did I imagine Capital Cruise becoming such a shared and anticipated worldwide phenomenon. I said Tulsa had the true moxie to show out, show off, and continue our legacy of being legendary, and I couldn’t be prouder of our city. The memory of seeing thousands of classic cars rolling down Route 66 will forever be imprinted on my mind. Congratulations Tulsa, take a bow!”
Nichols says the award goes to everyone who helped make the event and new record possible.
"This achievement belongs to every driver, volunteer, organizer, business owner, and spectator who helped make today possible. It also belongs to the Tulsans who have invested in the Mother Road for more than 20 years and to the community partners – from private businesses to philanthropic organizations – who have worked tirelessly to make Route 66 and Tulsa among the very best in the country." says Nichols.
