The average 401(k) balance in the U.S. hit $144,400 in the third quarter of 2025, up 9% from last year, according to Fidelity. IRA balances rose to $137,902, a 7% annual gain. Markets and higher contributions boosted totals, but a sharp divide remains. Median balances are far lower, with younger workers holding $20,000 to $40,000, while savers nearing retirement often exceed $270,000. Women hold about 30% less than men on median.
