EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (Sept. 23, 2025) – Peers across higher education believe North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is one of the nation’s top three historically Black universities (HBCUs), reinforcing the university’s reputational standing in the new “Best Colleges 2026” edition of U.S. News & World Report, released today.
In peer scoring, North Carolina A&T earned a 4.3 on a 5-point scale, second only to Spelman (4.5) and Howard (4.4). A&T maintained its position at No. 8 on the HBCU rankings. In peer reputation scoring among national universities, A&T had a 2.4 rating on a 5-point scale, with Howard (3.4) and Florida A&M (2.5) ranking just ahead.
The peer assessment scoring is based on a two-year weighted average to make scoring less vulnerable to big swings, while other ranking categories are based on data reported to the U.S. Department of Education for the 2023-24 academic year and the 2023 fiscal year.
The remainder of this year’s U.S. News ranking were a wash for the university with very minor changes across the nine categories in which it is ranked. A&T continued to be one of America’s 40 best performers in social mobility, as well as one of the nation’s top 130 public universities.
This is the first of three major college rankings publications that U.S. News will publish this academic year. The “Best Online Programs” rankings publish in January, with the “Best Graduate Programs” rankings due out next April.
