(NewsNation) — Five people were killed and five others injured after an Amazon Air cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, local officials said.
Miami’s mayor said three of the injured victims are in critical condition, and two others were transferred to a local hospital.
The plane struck multiple vehicles and caught fire, prompting a massive emergency response, a ground stop and widespread flight disruptions.
The aircraft, identified by the Federal Aviation Administration as 21 Air Flight 7598, was a Boeing 767-300 cargo plane operating on behalf of Amazon Air.
The flight had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, before overrunning the runway at about 2 p.m. local time.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said more than 60 units and 200 personnel responded to the scene after the aircraft left the runway.
“Units arrived to find an airplane that had caught on fire as a result of this crash, with heavy flames and smoke showing,” the department said in a social media update. Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze and assess potential victims, one of whom was found trapped under a vehicle that was struck.
Airport operations remain impacted, though conditions have improved since the initial ground stop.
Miami International Airport said at least one runway has reopened, and airport officials later reported that two of the airport’s four runways were back in operation.
Amazon confirmed one of its cargo aircraft was involved in the incident.
“The airplane, which was operated by 21 Air, was attempting to land when this incident occurred. We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to learn more and will cooperate fully with any investigation,” Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said in a statement.
Nantel continued, saying the company is “heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives in today’s incident at Miami International Airport. Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this devastating loss,” and that Amazon is working closely with local authorities to determine what happened.
The cause of the runway overrun remains under investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board. NTSB said it has launched a go-team investigation into the crash and will provide another update Monday morning. NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy will serve as the board member on scene.
“Our condolences go out to the families — it’s a tragedy,” Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner said on “Morning in America.” “We always look at safety at every level. We saw the runway incident at LaGuardia, now this separate [incident]. I have full faith that investigators will get to the bottom of it and keep our air and runways safe.”
