The quake hit 64.9 miles west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There is no danger of a tsunami, the National Tsunami Warning Center said on X.
The effects of the earthquake were felt across parts of Florida, which the USGS said is uncommon. Videos on social media showed items in people’s homes gently swaying.
“You can barely see it, but I felt it,” a person in Palm Beach captioned a TikTok video showing a plant rocking back and forth.
Another person in Hollywood, Florida, said they were sitting on the couch and felt movement. The person shared a video on X showing a water cooler shaking.
A person in Tampa shared a video on X of a houseplant shaking from the tremor.
The Miami Beach Fire Department said there is no cause for alarm.
The tremors were also felt in Mexico, according to a man who said everything was shaking in Playa del Carmen.
“Lots of shaking for a good minute,” he said on X. “Worse than the 2 earthquakes I’ve experienced in LA. Pretty scary before it ended.”
